God has spoken, and the rest is commentary, right?
- Rob Bell, Velvet Elvis
There are a few verses that I have learned along the way, but memorization is cold and has little meaning when you are trying to do it. I am more likely to know the themes of certain passages and the ideas they present.
For example, I know when I am looking for wisdom to go to Proverbs and when I want to praise God to go to Psalms. I know where to look up prophesy, where to find comfort in lament, where to learn about the earthly life of Jesus, and where to learn about the early church.
However, knowing the Word of God in my heart is essential to being able to hear his voice in my life daily.
So how did this work for me?
When I joined Moms in Touch, I learned how to pray using scripture.
For example, if you start your prayer every day with a few scriptures of praise, you will start to know those verses in your heart, and they will mean more to you than the ones you tried to memorize by themselves:
"Lord, you are able to do immeasurably more than all I can ask or imagine according to your power that is at work within me." (Ephesians 3:20)
"You are able to make all grace abount to me, so that in all things at all times, having all that I need, I will abound in every good work." (2 Corinthians 9:8)
These verses focus on a characteristic of God. He is able. You can pray scripture that affirms many characteristics of God: He is supreme, faithful, just, a comforter, a friend, etc.
So I don't just learn scripture; I learn about God and who he is.
For help with this, you can visit the leaders' corner at Moms in Touch for filled in prayer sheets..
It's kind of like eating a big, tasty salad before dinner. If I pray through scripture before I get to my own words, I have less to say. The Word of God is so complete, it fills the need for excess chatter.
I know that I have prayed God's will, because I have used his own words:
"May you fill (my child) with the knowledge of your will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. I pray this in order that (he/she) might live a life worthy of the Lord and may please you in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of you." (Collossions 1:9b-10)
What can I add to that?
There's just not much left to say.
Having the habit of praying scripture has brought the right verse to the tip of my tongue when others have needed to hear it:
"I pray that you shall strengthen ________'s heart, and that he/she will hope in the Lord." (Psalm 31:24)
"I pray that _______ would be bold and strong! That he/she would banish fear and doubt. May ________ remember that the Lord his/her God is with him/her wherever he/she goes." (Joshua 1:9)
"I pray that _____ will call on you in his/her day of trouble; for you will deliver him/her and he/she will honor you." (Psalm 50:15)
You may have other verses that you turn to when you need to pray. Whatever they are, you will learn them as you use them.
Maybe you won't know the chapter and the verse (yes, I am guilty of this). You will know that it is the Word of God you are speaking.
As with anything else, application is a key to learning. If you start praying scripture daily, you will be amazed at what you recall as these words are hidden in your heart.
