Are you willing to follow Him? That's the only way you and I will ever discover the One who calls us and the one we were born to be. Child, a great adventure awaits you.
-Beth Moore, The Beloved Disciple
The words in John 14:26 are hard:
If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters - yes, even his own life - he cannot be my disciple.
This was a moment when Jesus was being very clear about what life as a disciple will be like. The direction is clear.
Whenever I am caught between Jesus and anything, the answer is Jesus.
Unlike many of the frilly "sales pitches" you will hear about Christianity today, this is a very honest warning that a disciple is invited into a life involving hard choices.
Is this a crazy thing to ask?
The one who loved me enough to abandon everything for me is asking that I abandon everything for him.
In fact, my hero guarantees me it will be hard to stay by his side.
He asks me to join him on an exciting adventure, promising that through it all I will never be separated from him. (Romans 8:38-39)
I never know for certain where he is leading me.
I let go in faith on an unpredictable journey, full of twists and turns.
My only comfort while flying through life is the fact that I'm holding onto life's creator.
If that has been the most compelling part of your journey as a Christian so far, you might want to let go of the reigns a little.
For goodness sake, Jesus is not a nice church program!
In The Gospel According to Starbucks, Leonard Sweet wrote, "Maybe we should warn spiritual seekers in advance that Jesus is not for the faint of heart, instead of 'cooling down' the gospel so we can all sip religion comfortably on cushioned, suburban pews."
Don't we often try to achieve that easy, boring life?
Too much comfort can be a sure sign that I am not keeping step with Jesus. Jesus goes into uncomfortable places. That is reality. A life with him means we have to follow.
However, it is a life I would never want to miss.
