319773: Your Life in Rhythm: Achieving Freedom from Burnout, Busyness, and GuiltYour Life in Rhythm: Achieving Freedom from Burnout, Busyness, and Guilt

By Bruce Miller / Tyndale House

* Is your to-do list dictated by a constant striving to balance your work, home, and spiritual life? To really get things done you need to go with the flow! Introducing you to "rhythmic living," Miller helps you understand how to release misplaced priorities, adjust expectations, and move with the God-ordained cadences of the created order. 225 pages, softcover from Tyndale.

Today, as I was shamelessly twittering to invite your comments on Work-life Balance: Is this a good thing?, I was directed by Bruce Miller to his site and his new book about living life in rhythm instead of balance.

As I still really hate the word "balance" but can never come up with a proper replacement, I decided to download the first chapter and read more.

This is it. Bruce gets it.

Balance is false and impossible to achieve, but rhythm is natural.

Here is my favorite quote from the first chapter:

It's not that rest and intensity are to be held in balance at the same time, but rather that they're to be in rhythm over time.

Yes, it is okay to be very busy and intense for seasons of time if God has called you to a task that requires it.

Miller points out how our culture has taken away many of the natural rhythmic aspects of life that we used to live by.

For example, we turn on the lights when the sun goes down, or we eat grapes out-of-season because we can buy them from Chile.

We have ignored life's natural rhythm and tried to replace it with artificial balance.

I am glad to see a shift away from the concept of "balance." Bruce has given me the word I was looking for.
