Welcome

I pulled out my jacket last night as I sat watching softball practice. The chill in the air assured me that September is arriving.

What do you have planned for fall? My family loves football, so we are very excited for the new season. My church is also getting ready for our fall women's retreat. This is a time of great fellowship and refreshment.

In this issue, I want to focus on women's ministry.

We all have a part to play on the team. If you haven't read Teamwork - Who is on your team? yet, you may want to go there first. We need to have our team in place so that we can reach out to others.

Women's Ministry

Does your church have a women's ministry team?

What activities do the women of your church plan and participate in?

Common events on the agenda are usually retreats, "girls night out" socials, lunches with great speakers, and scrapbooking nights. These are all great "teambuilding" activities.

As long as our work does not stop there.

We also need to take our team out into the world to minister to those in need. We need to find the women who would never sign up or walk into one of our lunches. Those are the women who are in desperate need to know the love of Jesus.

  • The single mom who has no extra time and does not feel comfortable with all of the "family" talk.
  • The young girl making her living on the street who would never dream of walking into your church.
  • The victim of abuse who is embarassed or afraid of being judged by the church for leaving her husband.

These are just a few examples. I'm sure that if we seek we will find; if we genuinely ask for Jesus to show us who he needs us to help, we will find those opportunities.

Arise, Cry Out!

What about Prayer?

Does your church have an effective women's prayer ministry?

I mean a time with no food, no chatter, and no gossip disguised as prayer requests. Just sincere, desperate, humble prayer, lifting up the needs of your church, your children, and your community.

A great opportunity to involve women in prayer is coming in November. Moms in Touch International is holding a worldwide prayer event on Saturday, November 14th. Check the listing for a host site near you.

Imagine how powerful this day will be, with women all over the world participating in a wave of prayer around the globe! Don't miss the opportunity to be a part of this historic event.

Kelly's Review

901355: Let Go: Live Free of the Burdens All Women Know Let Go: Live Free of the Burdens All Women Know
By Sheila Walsh / Thomas Nelson

Women bear heavy burdens, and turning to their church is not always a pleasant thought. Fear of judgment and criticism leave them feeling isolated and hopeless, adding weight to their already unbearable load. Sheila Walsh is not afraid to tackle this subject from both ends. How do we find answers when we are hurting, and how should we respond to those who turn to us for encouragement?

Beware: This is not a book of trite happy thoughts and canned Sunday school answers. Sheila confronts the reality of the troubles women face as they struggle with depression, self-hatred, forgiveness, and temptation. She acknowledges the toughness of situations such as abuse and addiction, while gently leading the hurting to a healing God. Sheila is also kind but convicting as she reveals how the church contributes to the problem with "our words, our tone, and our body language that can make others feel isolated and judged."

This book is easy to digest as it blends short pieces of personal stories, biblical accounts, and fictional illustrations. Sheila is incredibly open about her own life, her personal struggles, and her judgmental blunders as she leads her readers to let go and be delivered by God.
